Die Leerwohnungsziffer, nach Kantonen gegliedert, wird jeweils per 1. Juni erhoben und im September desselben Jahres vom Bundesamt für Statistik veröffentlicht. Als Leerstände gezählt werden Wohnungen, die dauerhaft zur Vermietung ausgeschrieben sind und am Stichtag leer stehen.

* Seit dem Jahr 2010 wird die Leerwohnungsziffer aufgrund des Wohnungsbestandes der Gebäude- und Wohnungsstatistik (GWS) berechnet.
